High Flying

This page is dedicated to my attempt at breaking the world altitude record for a single kite. The record stands at 13,509 ft A.G.L. (above ground level)

I'll be making my flight(s) on Labor Day weekend of 2006 at Callaway, NE at the Callaway Kite Festival using a 26 foot Delta of my own design.

The kite will be carrying a GPS onboard and transmitting altitude and position data continuously for live tracking (and recovery if the big "IT" happens).

The winch for reeling the kite back in will be powered by a 6.5 h.p. gas engine with a centifugal clutch and two stages of gear reduction for a final pull speed of 60-250 feet per minute.

My brother Brian (computer Guru) will be running the computer and monitoring software for any problems while I fly (so to speak) the kite and friend Mark will be marking up a map for a hard copy in case things go too wrong.

Pictures of the equipment will be coming along soon.
